ChatGPT’s dominance is fading: New data shows below 50% drops in market share

Since its launch in 2022, OpenAI's ChatGPT has been a frontrunner in the generative AI landscape, attracting over a million users globally almost overnight. However, recent findings from Sensor Tower’s State of AI Report for 2026 reveal that ChatGPT's market share has dipped below the critical 50% threshold for the first time, signaling a shift in the competitive dynamics of AI assistants. Despite this decline, ChatGPT remains the most widely used AI assistant, boasting over 1.1 billion monthly users. Nonetheless, the report highlights a significant increase in the market presence of competitors. Google’s Gemini has captured 27.7% of the market share, while Anthropic’s Claude holds 10.3%. In contrast, other players like Grok, Perplexity, DeepSeek, and Meta AI have yet to surpass the 5% mark individually. The user data paints a fascinating picture; Gemini, for instance, has attracted approximately 662 million monthly users, and Claude has around 245 million. This illustrates the widening gap among the leading AI assistants. Interestingly, users are increasingly opting for multiple AI tools, switching between platforms like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude according to their specific needs and functionalities. Looking ahead, the AI app market is projected to see nearly 2.3 billion downloads in the first half of 2026, translating to more than $4.2 billion in consumer spending, a notable increase from the $1.83 billion spent in the same period last year. However, this growth appears to be decelerating. In response to these market changes, OpenAI is reportedly innovating its strategy. The company has begun introducing advertisements within ChatGPT as a new revenue source, while also shifting its focus toward enhancing its enterprise offerings. Moreover, there are plans for a “super app” that aims to revamp ChatGPT with a broader range of features and capabilities.
