OpenAI is set to unveil an upgraded memory feature for ChatGPT, aiming to deepen user engagement by recalling details from past discussions. This enhancement is particularly noteworthy as it will now be available to free-tier users for the first time. Initially introduced in April 2024, the memory feature has undergone significant improvements that allow it to utilize information from prior conversations more effectively. Over the past year, the introduction of a system known as 'dreaming' has worked in tandem with saved memories, resulting in a marked enhancement in ChatGPT's personalization capabilities. However, OpenAI acknowledges that this system has not yet fully met the demands of a comprehensive memory solution. According to a recent blog post by OpenAI, the revamped memory architecture builds upon the 'dreaming' system, which autonomously gathers data from earlier interactions. Users will now have the ability to view and review the memories ChatGPT has formed about them. A new Memory Summary page will provide an overview of what the AI has learned, allowing users to update or clarify specific details. The memory feature is designed to learn about users through three key principles: retaining useful information, adhering to personal preferences, and ensuring relevance in conversations. This upgrade promises a more enriched conversational experience for users, regardless of whether they are on the free tier or subscribed to Plus and Pro plans. In a significant development, OpenAI has doubled the memory storage capacity and optimized the system to reduce the computational demands for free users by approximately five times. This means that over the coming weeks, free users can expect a rollout of the dreaming feature, bringing them closer to the experience enjoyed by paid subscribers.
