ChargePoint has taken a significant step forward in the electric vehicle (EV) landscape with the introduction of its new Express Solo DC fast charger, designed to tackle one of the key challenges—charging speed. This innovative charger is compact and optimized for DC power, making it suitable for installation in confined spaces. With an impressive maximum output of 600 kW, this charger sets a new standard in the industry. Recent advancements in EV battery technology, highlighted by CATL, show that batteries are becoming increasingly efficient. While BYD's latest Blade battery can handle charging speeds of up to 1.5 MW, the U.S. market still lags behind China, where megawatt chargers are already the norm. Currently, Tesla Superchargers cap at 250 kW, Electrify America's peak is at 350 kW, and new IONIQ stations max out at 400 kW. In this context, the Express Solo’s capability stands out, equating to the speed of a Formula E pit stop. This standalone charger is ideally suited for deployment in urban areas, such as gas stations or convenience store parking lots. The Express Solo is versatile, allowing two EVs to charge simultaneously by distributing the 600 kW of power between them, or directing the full power to a single vehicle. Featuring ChargePoint's “Omni Port,” it supports both CCS1 and NACS connectors for maximum compatibility. Additionally, it accepts direct DC inputs from on-site energy storage solutions, eliminating the need for expensive inverters. With modular capabilities, the charger can be expanded to accommodate up to four plugs, with plans for eight connections in the near future.
