Character.ai enters the microdrama arena with its own productions, but there’s a twist

The popularity of microdramas has spurred a variety of companies within the attention economy to explore this trend, from dedicated apps to major social media platforms and streaming services. Character.ai, known for enabling conversations with custom AI avatars, is now stepping into this vibrant market by producing its own microdramas featuring AI characters. What sets Character.ai apart is a unique twist: users aged 18 and over can interact with the characters from these shows by asking them questions and even engaging in roleplay that allows for different storylines to unfold. To kick off this new venture, the company is launching three distinct microdramas: a romantic series titled “Last Summer,” a horror narrative named “The Nighttime Game,” and a survival-themed drama reminiscent of the Hunger Games, called “Eden Fall.” Character.ai has stated that these dramas are crafted using AI production tools. Looking ahead, their vision includes empowering users to create their own characters and series. A spokesperson for the company explained, “Starting with a studio-led model, c.ai Series allows our production team to establish the format, refine our workflow, and discern audience preferences for Character-native Microdrama entertainment. Ultimately, we aim to transform these insights into creator tools, enabling users to develop their own series featuring original Characters and share them with a global audience.” This initiative is part of a broader strategy reflecting Character.ai's shift towards entertainment-oriented features that began last year. In April, the company introduced a tool called Lorebook, designed for users to create detailed backgrounds for their characters. Another feature, known as Books, allows users to insert themselves into classic literary works or embody characters from those stories. Recently, Character.ai also announced it is testing c.ai FM, a feature intended for assembling audio series, alongside c.ai Reads, which focuses on fiction creation. Currently, the audio series feature is available to select users via the experimental c.ai Labs program, attracting the attention of professional writers looking to produce serialized audio dramas. The demand for this style of interactive entertainment is evident, with users reportedly spending over 950 minutes each month on Character.AI during the first half of 2026, according to Sensor Tower.
