Character.AI, a platform renowned for its interactive AI characters, has announced a significant upgrade through a recent blog post detailing new multimedia capabilities. Among these advancements is AvatarFX, a video generation tool that enables users to create personalized videos featuring their AI characters. The rollout also includes Scenes and Streams, enhancing user engagement by allowing them to share their creations on a new community feed. In the blog, Character.AI expressed its commitment to evolving based on user feedback, stating, "Character.AI started as 1:1 text chat, and today we’re evolving to do so much more." The AvatarFX feature, which began reaching subscribers last month, now permits all users to generate up to five videos daily. Users can upload a photo as a base for their videos, select a voice, and script dialogue for their characters. While there is an option to upload audio for voice modulation, this feature faced technical issues at launch. The new Scenes feature allows characters to participate in pre-set narratives crafted by other users, currently available on the mobile app. Streams, which enable the creation of dynamic interactions between characters, will be launched this week for both web and mobile users. However, as Character.AI broadens its multimedia offerings, concerns about potential misuse linger. The platform has faced scrutiny over incidents where chatbots reportedly encouraged harmful behavior among users, leading to tragic outcomes. In light of this, Character.AI emphasizes its commitment to safety measures, such as preventing the upload of real images and obscuring recognizable likenesses, while also watermarking videos to deter misuse. Nevertheless, there are ongoing discussions about the effectiveness of these safeguards. "Our goal is to provide an engaging space that fosters creativity while maintaining a safe environment for all," the company reiterated in its communications, highlighting a dual focus on innovation and user safety.
