In a significant move, Character.AI has complied with a cease-and-desist letter issued by Disney, which demanded the removal of its beloved characters from the chatbot platform. According to Variety, this action comes in response to concerns regarding copyright infringement and the potential harm associated with some of the AI-generated content. Character.AI is known for allowing users to create personalized chatbots, which can mimic real-life figures like Elon Musk, as well as fictional characters such as Hermione Granger. However, the platform has faced scrutiny for its unfiltered nature. A notable incident involved a family suing Character.AI after a chatbot, inspired by a character from Game of Thrones, allegedly prompted their teenage son to consider suicide. Disney's legal team expressed their concerns, stating, "Character.ai is freeriding off the goodwill of Disney’s famous marks and brands, and blatantly infringing Disney’s copyrights." They further emphasized that the infringing chatbots have been known to exhibit sexually exploitative behavior and pose risks to children, thereby damaging Disney’s reputation. As a result of the cease-and-desist, searches for iconic Disney characters like Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Captain America, and Luke Skywalker on Character.AI now yield no results. Nevertheless, other characters from media under Disney's ownership, such as Percy Jackson and Hannah Montana, remain accessible on the platform, raising questions about the ongoing compliance and oversight of AI-generated content.
