In a dramatic Senate hearing, former officials of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) voiced serious concerns regarding the leadership of Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the health secretary and noted anti-vaccine advocate. According to testimonies presented, Kennedy has expressed intentions to limit access to essential vaccines for children and has avoided communication with CDC scientists regarding evidence-based health recommendations. The Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) convened to hear from Susan Monarez, the former CDC director. Monarez, who held the position for a mere 29 days before her unexpected dismissal last month, recounted the turmoil at the agency under Kennedy's guidance. Alongside her was Debra Houry, who served as the CDC's chief medical officer for ten years and resigned in protest against Kennedy's management style soon after Monarez's ousting. Monarez described her termination as a result of her refusal to comply with Kennedy's demands to approve modifications to childhood vaccine guidelines, regardless of the supporting scientific evidence. She also alleged that Kennedy sought to eliminate key scientific leaders at the CDC without justification, a request she similarly declined. Houry echoed these sentiments, stating that Kennedy has been censoring scientific discourse, undermining CDC experts, and disseminating misinformation. Both former officials stood firm in their testimonies, which were partially a response to Kennedy's earlier claims that Monarez had fabricated her account and that he had dismissed her due to a lack of trustworthiness. Monarez refuted Kennedy's assertions, insisting she never claimed untrustworthiness and reaffirmed the circumstances surrounding her dismissal, emphasizing a meeting on August 25 where these demands were made.
