Cerebras bumps up IPO range as it looks to raise up to $4.8 billion

Cerebras Systems, a prominent player in the artificial intelligence chip sector, has revised its initial public offering (IPO) price range, now targeting between $150 and $160 per share. This adjustment marks an increase from the previously disclosed range of $115 to $125 per share, as indicated in a filing on Monday. If Cerebras successfully sells shares at the upper end of the new range, the company could potentially raise as much as $4.8 billion through this IPO. This projection suggests a market valuation of up to $48.8 billion on a fully diluted basis, a significant rise from the $23 billion valuation it reported back in February during a funding round. Cerebras is positioning itself as a competitor in the rapidly evolving landscape of generative AI model training and operation, traditionally dominated by Nvidia's graphics processing units (GPUs). The company claims that its chips not only outperform GPUs in speed but also do so at a lower cost. The impressive performance of Cerebras chips has led to a substantial commitment exceeding $20 billion from OpenAI, which utilizes these chips for its code-writing model. Rather than primarily focusing on hardware sales, Cerebras has been actively integrating its chips into data centers and offering cloud services. This strategy puts it in direct competition with established cloud infrastructure providers. However, in a recent move, Amazon Web Services announced a partnership to incorporate Cerebras chips into its own data centers, further validating the company's technology. Cerebras has also gained attention in the ongoing trial involving Elon Musk's lawsuit against OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. During recent court proceedings, OpenAI's co-founder and president, Greg Brockman, highlighted Cerebras' chips as critical to the computational needs of their models, mentioning that discussions of a merger between OpenAI and Cerebras had taken place, with Musk expressing interest in such a deal. The IPO for Cerebras is anticipated to launch on May 14, according to Nasdaq, marking a significant milestone for the company in the competitive AI hardware space.
