Cerebras stock falls after blockbuster IPO debut — here's what's happening

Cerebras Systems experienced a tumultuous trading day on Friday, following its impressive debut as one of the largest tech IPOs in recent years. The semiconductor company launched its shares at $185 on the Nasdaq, only to see them soar to a closing price of $331.07, marking a remarkable 68% increase and a market valuation of roughly $95 billion. In its initial public offering, Cerebras sold 30 million shares, raising a staggering $5.55 billion, the largest sum for a tech firm since Uber's entry into the market in 2019. However, despite an early rise of approximately 6% in premarket trading, the stock later dipped by 2.6% before the session ended. Specializing in AI hardware, Cerebras produces massive computer chips and AI systems that are designed for faster training and operation of AI models compared to conventional GPUs. Their flagship product, the Wafer Scale Engine 3, is notable for being constructed from an entire silicon wafer, as opposed to multiple smaller chips. The company asserts that its chips outperform Nvidia's GPUs in speed. Nonetheless, skepticism remains among some analysts regarding Cerebras' long-term prospects and the practicality of its wafer-scale AI technology. Analysts from Davidson remarked that while the IPO might generate initial excitement, they urge caution, describing the technology as 'niche-y' and still in its 'early stages of maturity.' They noted that while the Wafer Scale Engine may excel in certain applications, it lacks the flexibility of existing AI chip systems. The IPO propelled CEO Andrew Feldman and CTO Sean Lie into billionaire status, with their stakes valued at $3.2 billion and $1.7 billion, respectively. In an interview on CNBC's "Squawk Box," Feldman expressed confidence in the company's readiness to enter public markets, emphasizing the numerous growth opportunities ahead and affirming that this funding route was ideal for their expansion plans.
