AI chip company Cerebras raises $1 billion in pre-IPO funding round

Cerebras, a prominent player in the AI chip market, has successfully raised $1.1 billion in a recent funding round, pushing its valuation to an impressive $8.1 billion. This comes as the company aims to compete with Nvidia, the current leader in the AI chip space, while navigating its path towards a public offering. Originally filed for an IPO a year ago, Cerebras has opted to delay its market debut, allowing it more time to solidify its position. The firm specializes in designing chips tailored for training and executing AI models and has made significant strides in offering cloud-based services that support these models in handling queries. However, the road to public trading hasn’t been without challenges. Following its IPO filing last September, Cerebras faced scrutiny regarding its dependence on a single customer, the Middle Eastern company G42. This scrutiny was compounded by delays in obtaining necessary approvals from the U.S. Treasury Department's Committee on Foreign Investment (CFIUS) for G42 to increase its stake in the company. Despite these hurdles, investor confidence remains high. Co-founder and CEO Andrew Feldman noted that the latest funding round nearly doubles the company's valuation from $4 billion just two years ago. "We have tremendous opportunities in front of us," Feldman commented, emphasizing the importance of capital to capitalize on these prospects. Aiming for a public offering by 2025, Cerebras is not alone in the fundraising arena, as many AI companies are attracting substantial investments. For instance, Databricks announced a $1 billion funding round with a valuation exceeding $100 billion, while OpenAI and Anthropic have also secured significant financial backing recently. The latest funding will facilitate the expansion of Cerebras’ U.S. manufacturing capabilities. Currently, its chip wafers are produced by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing and subsequently packaged in the U.S. As demand for its products continues to grow, the company plans to significantly increase its production workforce, projecting an 8x increase in manufacturing capacity in the last year, with further plans for a 4x increase in the near future. In the second quarter of 2024, Cerebras reported revenues of approximately $70 million, a substantial increase from under $6 million in the same period the previous year. This growth is partly attributed to new business partnerships with notable companies, including Hugging Face, Meta, Notion, and Perplexity.
