Benchmark raises $225M in special funds to double down on Cerebras

In a significant development for the AI chip sector, Cerebras Systems has announced a remarkable $1 billion funding round that elevates its valuation to $23 billion—an impressive leap from the $8.1 billion valuation just six months prior. The funding round, primarily led by Tiger Global, also saw a substantial contribution from Benchmark Capital, which invested at least $225 million. Benchmark Capital, a notable player in Silicon Valley, has been an early supporter of Cerebras, having led its $27 million Series A funding back in 2016. To facilitate its recent investment, Benchmark established two separate funding vehicles, both named 'Benchmark Infrastructure,' in line with its policy of maintaining fund sizes under $450 million. Cerebras distinguishes itself through the extraordinary size and capabilities of its processors. The company's flagship Wafer Scale Engine, introduced in 2024, measures about 8.5 inches per side and incorporates an astounding 4 trillion transistors on a single silicon chip. This design is revolutionary compared to traditional chips, which are typically small fragments of the larger 300-millimeter silicon wafers used in semiconductor manufacturing. By utilizing nearly an entire wafer, Cerebras achieves 900,000 specialized cores that operate in unison, effectively eliminating the data transfer bottlenecks faced by standard GPU clusters. The result is a system that reportedly processes AI calculations over 20 times faster than its competitors. The funding arrives at a pivotal moment for Cerebras, located in Sunnyvale, California, as it continues to solidify its presence in the competitive AI infrastructure landscape. Recently, the company secured a multi-year agreement valued at over $10 billion to supply 750 megawatts of computing capacity to OpenAI, a partnership intended to enhance response times for complex AI queries through to 2028. Notably, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is among those investing in Cerebras. Cerebras claims that its proprietary AI-focused chips outperform Nvidia's offerings. However, the company’s journey toward an initial public offering (IPO) has faced challenges, particularly due to its previous relationship with G42, an AI firm from the UAE that represented 87% of its revenue as of mid-2024. G42's historical connections to Chinese tech firms prompted a national security investigation by the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States, delaying Cerebras' IPO plans and leading to the withdrawal of an earlier filing in early 2025. Fortunately, G42 has since been removed from Cerebras' investor roster, clearing the path for a new IPO attempt expected in the second quarter of 2026, as reported by Reuters.
