Cerebras IPO makes billions for Benchmark but VC Eric Vishria almost didn’t take the meeting

The recent initial public offering (IPO) of Cerebras Systems has proven to be a monumental success, generating billions in value for the company, its founders, and its key investors. Benchmark, a significant stakeholder with a 9.5% ownership, is among the most notable beneficiaries of this financial windfall. Eric Vishria, a general partner at Benchmark and a member of the Cerebras board since its inception in 2016, shared that his initial meeting with the AI chip startup was almost a reluctant endeavor. Reflecting on that day, he recounted, "It was five founders and a deck, and it was our first hardware investment in 10 years." At the time, Vishria had only been a venture capitalist for about 18 months, following his successful exit from the social browser startup RockMelt, which he sold to Yahoo for an estimated $60-$70 million in 2013. Benchmark's reputation for being highly selective in its investments, especially in hardware, had Vishria questioning his decision to engage with Cerebras. He humorously lamented, “Why did I take this meeting?” However, as CEO Andrew Feldman presented Cerebras' innovative vision, Vishria’s skepticism quickly transformed into enthusiasm. The turning point came when Feldman articulated the company’s unique approach to AI training—highlighting the limitations of GPUs in favor of their groundbreaking chip technology. Years before the influential Transformer paper from Google reshaped the AI landscape, Cerebras was already proposing a revolutionary chip designed for AI training, a notion that did not align with the current manufacturing capabilities. Intrigued by the potential, Vishria sought validation from his Benchmark colleagues, only to find that they too were unfamiliar with hardware investments. This led him to invite one of Benchmark's founding partners, Bruce Dunlevie, to evaluate Feldman's pitch. Despite Dunlevie's concerns about the challenges ahead, he recognized the potential of the Cerebras team, which had previously achieved success with their startup SeaMicro's acquisition by AMD. The road to success was fraught with obstacles, including the development of innovative cooling methods for their large chip and the intricate engineering required to avoid damage during production. As Cerebras navigated through financial challenges, including raising substantial funds in a difficult venture capital environment, the breakthrough came about 18 months ago. Their chips, initially designed for training, proved to excel in inference tasks—executing AI models to produce outputs. This revelation coincided with a burgeoning demand for computational power in the AI sector. Cerebras' IPO faced initial hurdles due to scrutiny over national security linked to investments from its major client, Abu Dhabi's G42. However, delays turned advantageous as leading companies like OpenAI and AWS became clients, significantly boosting revenues and leading to profitability. Vishria applauded the Cerebras team for their determination and adaptability, which ultimately helped them achieve this remarkable milestone. As Benchmark's shares surged to a market value of over $5.3 billion following the IPO, Vishria reflected on the fortune of their initial investment, which totaled approximately $270 million. With a six-month lockup period before selling shares, Benchmark is poised to reap substantial rewards for its foresight in backing Cerebras, showcasing the power of investing outside traditional comfort zones.
