Cerebras Systems experienced a significant downturn on Wednesday, with shares plummeting nearly 20%. This decline came despite the company announcing first-quarter earnings that surpassed expectations. The AI chipmaker, in its inaugural earnings report since going public, projected a narrower gross margin for its core operations, estimating a full-year margin between 38% and 41%, down from the 47% achieved in the first quarter. The stock reached a new low, nearly approaching the price set during the company's IPO. In an interview with CNBC, Cerebras CEO Andrew Feldman expressed that investors may have misinterpreted the company's margin forecast. He explained that Cerebras plans to temporarily rent equipment from one of its largest clients as part of a strategy to increase capacity more quickly while establishing its own data center infrastructure. This decision, while aimed at expediting growth, is expected to impact profit margins for the current year. According to the earnings report, Cerebras generated $193 million in revenue for the quarter, reflecting a remarkable 94% increase compared to the same period last year. Additionally, the company reported a net loss of $14 million, a notable improvement from the $23.9 million loss recorded a year prior.
