Cerebras CEO Andrew Feldman says the US's 'patchwork' policies are setting back AI

During a recent discussion on the 20VC podcast, Andrew Feldman, the CEO of Cerebras, voiced his concerns regarding the fragmented regulatory environment in the United States, which he believes hampers the country's position in the race for artificial intelligence dominance. He emphasized that while China’s centralized government has enabled it to build a robust AI infrastructure, the U.S. faces challenges due to local regulations that can impede significant projects. Feldman explained that the decentralized nature of U.S. governance leads to a 'patchwork' of policies that can slow down initiatives, particularly those related to energy production and data centers that are crucial for AI development. He pointed out that whereas China has effectively established extensive energy resources through centralized decision-making, the U.S. should seek to streamline its support for AI investments instead of merely emulating China’s approach. He proposed a temporary moratorium on state-level AI regulations, similar to a bill previously advocated by Senator Ted Cruz, which aimed to prevent local laws from interfering with AI advancements for a decade. Feldman suggested a five-year moratorium could serve as a starting point, allowing the industry to innovate without the burden of varying regulations across states. As a leader in chip manufacturing, Cerebras is at the forefront of the AI industry, producing large chips specifically designed for artificial intelligence, contrasting with Nvidia’s GPU dominance. Recently, the company decided to withdraw its IPO filing to make updates reflecting its evolving business strategy and the fast-paced AI landscape. Feldman also criticized the idea of enhancing China's technological capabilities with advanced American tech, urging instead for the U.S. to focus on fostering partnerships with European allies and Gulf states. He argued against selling top-tier technology to political adversaries, advocating for a more strategic approach to international tech relations.
