Cerebras CEO Andrew Feldman says you can't 'build something extraordinary' working 38 hours a week

Cerebras CEO Andrew Feldman recently shared his insights on the rigorous commitment required to build transformative businesses during a conversation on the 20VC podcast hosted by Harry Stebbings. Feldman, whose company is challenging Nvidia's stronghold in the AI chip market, emphasized that aiming for greatness necessitates an unwavering dedication. He expressed skepticism towards the idea that one can achieve extraordinary outcomes while maintaining a standard 38-hour workweek. "To take on the world's first $4 trillion company, a mere part-time effort is not enough," he stated. "This mindset is puzzling to me." The CEO likened entrepreneurial dedication to the relentless work ethic seen in elite athletes, citing NFL Hall of Famer Steve Young and his teammate Jerry Rice, who practiced tirelessly even after securing a Super Bowl victory. Feldman believes that true success requires an all-consuming passion and effort. While he acknowledges a prevalent hustle culture in Silicon Valley, Feldman contrasts it with the more balanced approaches of some renowned leaders like Warren Buffett. He questioned whether Buffett and his late partner Charlie Munger would prefer to invest in companies driven by founders who are tirelessly dedicated to their vision, rather than those who clock out at the end of the day. Feldman also noted that attracting employees with a similar mindset is not challenging. "Engineers are motivated by a desire to innovate and create, not just to meet minimal standards," he remarked. For him, the goal is to foster a culture of passionate builders who aspire to change the world through their work.
