Factory CEO says he bought each of his 30 employees a $3,000 cooling mattress cover so 'they'll be sharper' at work

In a unique move to enhance workplace productivity, the CEO of the AI startup Factory has invested in high-end sleep technology for his employees. Matan Grinberg, who founded the company in 2023, provided each of his 30 initial employees with a $3,000 Eight Sleep mattress cover, aiming to ensure they are at their best during work hours. Factory has seen impressive growth, expanding to 120 employees and securing $150 million in funding from notable investors including Khosla Ventures, Sequoia Capital, and Blackstone. On the podcast '20VC', Grinberg likened his team to professional athletes, emphasizing the importance of good sleep for maximizing mental performance. "To do that, you need to get good sleep," he stated, highlighting his commitment to employee well-being. The Eight Sleep mattress covers are designed to regulate temperature, offering both cooling and heating features, and even allowing different settings for partners sharing the same bed. Grinberg's initiative goes beyond just sleep; he has also implemented a ban on processed sugars in the office, opting instead for healthier snack options like protein chips and canned matcha. Rejecting the extravagant perks that characterized the tech industry in the past, Grinberg noted that such benefits often felt disconnected from work. He criticized the culture of overwork, commonly referred to as 'grindslop,' stating, "We're not running a daycare. I don't need to mandate certain hours." While he has not yet extended the mattress cover gift to new employees, he is considering making it a standard benefit, or at least providing a health stipend. The focus on sleep and wellness in the workplace is part of a broader trend, with many companies recognizing the link between rest and productivity. For instance, the CEO of the wearables company Whoop recently announced a financial incentive for employees who maintain high sleep performance. As the post-pandemic emphasis on wellness continues, practices like 'sleepmaxxing' are becoming common, with consumers investing in various products to improve their sleep quality. While Grinberg admits he has yet to quantify the productivity gains from the Eight Sleep covers, he believes that better rest translates to sharper, more effective employees. "They’re going to be better," he affirmed, clearly optimistic about the positive impact of his investment in sleep technology.
