The story of Top Gun was inspired by a 1983 article in California magazine that explored the lives of fighter pilots stationed at Naval Air Station Miramar in San Diego, often referred to as 'Fightertown USA.' With its combination of striking aerial photography and compelling narrative, the article caught the attention of producers Jerry Bruckheimer and Don Simpson. They enlisted screenwriters Jim Cash and Jack Epps Jr., with Epps even participating in declassified training sessions and experiencing a flight in an F-14 to bring authenticity to the script.
