As the International Space Station (ISS) approaches a remarkable milestone of 25 years of continuous human presence, a new digital resource has emerged to encapsulate its incredible journey. The website, ISS in Real Time, allows users to explore the extensive history of the ISS, covering every one of the 9,131 days of human habitation. This innovative project, developed by NASA contractors Ben Feist and David Charney during their spare time, aims to bring together a wealth of data from various sources into a cohesive timeline. Until now, much of the information—ranging from photographs and videos to audio communications—was scattered across different platforms, making it difficult for the public to fully appreciate the ISS's legacy. Launched on October 27, just days before the anniversary on November 2, ISS in Real Time presents an impressive array of statistics. At its inception, the site boasts mission data covering 9,064 days, representing 99.32% of the ISS's operational timeline. Users can access 4,739 days with complete space-to-ground audio coverage, showcasing an astounding 4,561,987 communications in 69 languages. Additionally, the archive includes over 6.9 million photographs taken in space and nearly 1,000 videos that bring the ISS experience to life. According to Feist, the project is more than just a collection of publicly available data; it represents a significant engineering achievement, allowing users to engage with the ISS's history like never before. By meticulously compiling this information, the team has created a unique portal to honor the legacy of one of humanity’s greatest achievements in space exploration.
