WhatsApp rolls out festive features for New Year 2026

WhatsApp is rolling out an array of festive features just in time for New Year’s celebrations. The messaging app, owned by Meta, has revealed that New Year’s Eve consistently ranks as its busiest day, with record-breaking volumes of messages and calls worldwide. In a blog post released on Monday, WhatsApp highlighted its impressive statistics, mentioning that on ordinary days, the platform handles over 100 billion messages and 2 billion calls. However, on the day when the world welcomes a new year, those numbers soar even higher. The platform expressed its pride in playing a role in helping people connect and share their New Year wishes. To enhance the New Year experience, WhatsApp introduced four new features designed to add a festive flair to users' holiday greetings. Among these is a special “2026 sticker pack,” allowing users to send personalized New Year messages. For those celebrating virtually, WhatsApp has added interactive effects for video calls, enabling users to trigger fireworks, confetti, and star animations at the click of an icon. Additionally, the app is reintroducing a unique reaction animation that activates when users tap the confetti emoji while responding to messages. In a first for WhatsApp, animated stickers will now be available in the Status section, combining a special “2026 layout” with animated stickers for users to share their New Year updates. WhatsApp has also provided helpful tips for coordinating New Year celebrations within group chats. Users can create and pin event details to keep them visible, gather RSVPs, and ensure that everyone is informed about the plans. The platform encourages utilizing the Polls feature in group chats to finalize important aspects like food and activities. For added safety, WhatsApp recommends sharing live locations to help friends navigate to the celebration venue or to notify loved ones upon returning home. For those unable to attend the festivities in person, sending voice or video notes is suggested as a way to maintain connections. With these exciting new features, WhatsApp aims to enhance the joy of ringing in the New Year while keeping everyone connected.
