Report: CDC director being ousted just weeks after Senate confirmation

In a shocking turn of events, just weeks after her confirmation by the Senate, Susan Monarez is reportedly being removed from her position as the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). This information comes from a report by The Washington Post, which cites anonymous sources within the Trump administration. The Department of Health and Human Services has been approached for clarification regarding this unexpected ousting, but as of now, there has been no official response. This situation continues to develop, and updates will be provided as more information emerges. Monarez's confirmation took place at the end of July, where she secured a 51–47 vote largely along party lines. Her appointment marked a significant moment as she was the first CDC director to require Senate confirmation following a law established in 2022. On July 31, she was sworn in by U.S. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., an outspoken advocate against vaccines, who expressed strong confidence in her capabilities. He stated, "Dr. Monarez is a public health expert with unimpeachable scientific credentials. I have full confidence in her ability to restore the CDC’s role as the most trusted authority in public health and to strengthen our nation's readiness to confront infectious diseases and biosecurity threats." Monarez holds a PhD in microbiology and immunology and previously served as the deputy director for the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H) during the Biden administration. Her extensive background includes leadership roles at the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA), the Department of Homeland Security, and advisory positions with the White House’s Office of Science and Technology Policy and the National Security Council. Before her confirmation, Monarez also acted as the CDC’s director from January to March of this year but stepped down when nominated for the permanent role. She was the second nominee for the position under Trump, following Dave Weldon, whose candidacy was withdrawn due to concerns over his anti-vaccine stance.
