CDC vaccine panel realizes again it has no idea what it’s doing, delays big vote

A federal vaccine advisory panel, appointed by Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., encountered significant confusion during its recent meeting regarding the hepatitis B vaccination recommendations for newborns. The panel, which had attempted to revisit this issue in September, postponed its decision once again, revealing a lack of understanding about the topic at hand. The delay, decided by a 6–3 vote, came after panel members expressed uncertainty over the wording of the proposed new recommendations. Just 72 hours before the meeting, they received three differing versions of the recommendation, leaving many members bewildered. Furthermore, the presentations delivered during the meeting were dominated by anti-vaccine activists lacking in relevant expertise, leading to numerous misleading claims and further muddling the discussion. The chaotic atmosphere of the meeting highlighted the panel's departure from evidence-based practices in vaccine policy, as it opted to engage with unvetted claims, conspiracy theories, and selectively chosen studies. This disarray was punctuated by moments of tension and confusion among panel members. Medical and health experts closely monitored the proceedings, particularly given the panel's potential to revoke the recommendation for hepatitis B vaccinations at birth. The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), which plays a crucial role in shaping national vaccine policy, has historically influenced health insurance coverage for vaccinations. A decision to withdraw the recommendation could have significant implications, potentially denying Americans access to no-cost hepatitis B vaccinations.
