PSA: The Steam Controller’s magnetic charger can be a fire hazard

User Toikka recounted a frightening experience where their metallic watch strap inadvertently came into contact with the charging puck, leading to a short circuit that caused the puck to start sizzling. The strap had accidentally fallen from a nearby watch charger and struck the puck at an unfortunate angle, narrowly avoiding what could have been a fire. Valve, the company behind the Steam Controller, seems to be aware of this potential hazard. Their user manual includes a cautionary note, advising users that both the charging puck and the controller have magnetic components that could attract metallic objects. To mitigate risks such as sparks that could lead to property damage or personal injury, Valve recommends keeping the charging area clear of metallic items. Additionally, the manual provides warnings regarding the possible negative effects of the magnets on medical devices, credit cards, and magnetic data storage devices nearby. Users are urged to exercise caution when using the magnetic charger to ensure safety and avoid any mishaps.
