Jamie Dimon says businesses are already getting smarter about AI spending

In a recent appearance on CNBC, JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon highlighted the rising costs associated with artificial intelligence and the necessity for companies to approach their AI spending with caution. He emphasized that organizations should carefully evaluate their investment in AI technologies and seek optimal returns on their expenditures. Dimon noted that many businesses are already recognizing the financial implications of escalating AI expenses. "They all see the costs going up rapidly," he remarked, stressing the importance of rational decision-making when it comes to resource allocation in AI. Under Dimon’s leadership since 2006, JPMorgan has been proactive in assessing the value added by AI. The bank regularly engages in negotiations with vendors to ensure cost-effectiveness. He observed a trend where companies are becoming increasingly strategic in their AI usage, often opting for the most economical solutions available. "I've already seen tons of systems where people are sending queries to the cheapest token available," Dimon explained. He believes this shift towards efficiency will extend beyond AI to encompass power consumption and data center operations as well. Furthermore, Dimon addressed concerns regarding data security, reassuring stakeholders that JPMorgan is committed to protecting its data and intellectual property. "You should assume that JPMorgan will do everything they can to protect its own data, its own IP, to protect our customers," he stated. Dimon’s comments echo a growing sentiment among business leaders advocating for a cautious approach to AI spending, often referred to as modelmaxxing. This approach encourages companies to resist the temptation of using the most advanced AI models for every application, especially as AI-related costs continue to climb. Critics of excessive spending on AI tools, such as Palantir CEO Alex Karp, argue that many organizations are unwittingly investing in solutions that yield little to no value. Karp described the current landscape as one where companies are wasting resources on tokens that do not enhance productivity. Adding to this narrative, Andrew Feldman, CEO of Cerebras Systems, criticized the notion of unlimited token usage as impractical. He likened it to using a luxury car for simple errands, advocating instead for more sensible and cost-effective AI solutions. "You don't need a Ferrari to go to the grocery store," Feldman quipped, encouraging businesses to explore lower-cost options for their AI needs.
