Cash App launches a wand for tap-and-pay

Cash App is set to revolutionize the way we make payments with the introduction of a new gadget: a wand designed for tap-and-pay transactions. Launching on Thursday, this $25 wand draws inspiration from a popular social media trend where users simulate paying with a magical wand that conceals a tap-and-pay credit card. This innovative wand is part of Cash App's expanding lineup of NFC-powered tag hardware, with plans to introduce additional formats in the near future. Each wand connects to the Cash App Card and is compatible with outlets that support Visa's tap-to-pay system. Users can easily activate the wand by linking it to the app, and importantly, there is no minimum balance required for the tag to function. The wand features a convenient keychain ring, making it easy to attach to bags or clothing, allowing for seamless payments at events where reaching for a phone might be cumbersome, such as concerts or sports games. The whimsical nature of tapping a wand to complete purchases could particularly resonate with younger audiences, especially during festive occasions like birthday shopping. With each transaction, wand users receive instant notifications regarding their spending, and they have the ability to lock or unlock the tag from the app whenever needed. In case the wand is misplaced, users can quickly deactivate it through the app. To enhance security, Cash App is actively monitoring for any fraudulent activity linked to these payments. Thomas Templeton, Hardware Lead at Block, expressed excitement about the wand's potential, stating, “While digital wallets blend into the background and physical cards are often lost in wallets, Cash App Tags offer a fresh, visible, and social payment experience.” The company is also looking to release various types of tags, including limited editions, in the upcoming months, aiming to make some models a permanent fixture by summer. With this launch, Cash App is strategically targeting Gen Z users, continuing its efforts to attract younger demographics. Since introducing teen accounts in 2021, the Block-owned fintech has expanded its offerings to include parent-controlled debit cards for children aged six to twelve this year.
