Cards Against Humanity settles trespass lawsuit against SpaceX

Cards Against Humanity, the well-known party game brand celebrated for its bold humor, has come to a settlement with SpaceX regarding a trespassing lawsuit filed last year. The controversy revolved around a piece of land along the Rio Grande River in Cameron County, Texas, which Cards Against Humanity acquired in 2017 through a successful crowdfunding campaign that raised $2.25 million from over 150,000 fans. The aim was to block former President Donald Trump’s proposed border wall. This land is adjacent to SpaceX's Starbase rocket complex, leading to tensions when Cards Against Humanity accused SpaceX of unlawfully entering the property and leaving behind construction materials and equipment. Although SpaceX and its legal representatives did not provide comments on the matter, details of the settlement remain undisclosed. Cards Against Humanity had originally sought $15 million in damages and promised supporters that they would receive up to $100 each from any proceeds. However, supporters will not receive cash. Instead, they are offered a special expansion pack for the party game featuring exclusive cards themed around Elon Musk. In an email to backers, the company humorously acknowledged the situation, stating, "While we can’t give you what you really wanted—cash money from Elon Musk—we’re going to make it up to you, our best, sexiest customers…with comedy!" Cards Against Humanity expressed satisfaction in standing up to what they termed a bully, emphasizing that SpaceX has since removed the equipment from the land. They are now focused on restoring the area to its original condition, free from debris and construction remnants. Previously, the company had warned supporters that they might not receive significant compensation, humorously predicting they might only get "$2 tops." The lawsuit progressed rapidly, with both parties exchanging evidence and a trial originally set for November. Cards Against Humanity confirmed that SpaceX acknowledged the trespass during the discovery phase, which they viewed as a validation of their claims. Despite their confidence in winning, the company opted for a settlement, citing potential legal costs that could outweigh any financial gains. The situation highlights the challenges smaller companies face when going up against larger corporations with substantial resources, as well as Musk's notorious reputation for engaging in legal battles.
