Canva’s new Affinity app is free to use but locks AI features behind a subscription

Canva, the leading graphic design platform, has recently integrated the Affinity image-editing and publishing apps into a single application known as "Affinity by Canva." This update, which combines the functionalities of the Photo, Designer, and Publisher apps, is available for free to users with a Canva account. However, users seeking access to generative AI features will need to subscribe to Canva's existing paid plans, priced at $120 annually for individuals. This development brings clarity to the future of Affinity after its acquisition by Canva last year. Many users had concerns about the compatibility of Affinity's traditional, one-time payment model with Canva’s subscription approach, as well as their differing perspectives on generative AI. The new Affinity app promises to retain the core features that existing users value while placing generative AI tools behind a paywall. Though this may initially seem beneficial for users who appreciate Affinity’s previous stance against AI, it also raises questions for those who prefer the predictability of owning software outright. The app is designed to run seamlessly on both Windows and macOS, supporting systems from Windows 10 to the latest versions of macOS, including Apple Silicon. An updated version for iPad is expected to be released soon. Affinity CEO Ash Hewson emphasized the brand's commitment to professional designers in his announcement, stating that the app was developed in close collaboration with the community. He highlighted the importance of performance, reliability, and creative freedom, which have been central to the development process, driven by feedback from thousands of users. This new chapter for Affinity aims to uphold the brand's legacy while adapting to the evolving needs of its user base.
