Canada's status as a measles-free nation has been revoked, with the highly contagious virus now deemed endemic, as confirmed by the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) on Monday. A team of PAHO experts meticulously analyzed disease data last week to assess the presence of measles across the Americas, leading to this significant conclusion. Once celebrated for its elimination of measles in 1998, Canada now stands alone as the only country in the region where the virus is actively spreading. This shift affects the broader Americas, which lost its elimination status, a designation achieved in 2016. Although countries like the United States and Mexico are experiencing rising case numbers, they have not yet reached the endemic classification. Measles is classified as eliminated when a country can maintain a period of 12 months without ongoing local transmission. While sporadic cases may arise from international travel, the loss of elimination status occurs only when sustained transmission continues for an entire year. Canada had successfully maintained its elimination status until recent events. The decline in vaccination rates, fueled by misinformation and anti-vaccine sentiments, has played a crucial role in this resurgence. Despite the majority of Canadian and American parents continuing to vaccinate their children, certain communities have fallen significantly below the necessary vaccination threshold. These areas have provided fertile ground for the virus. The current outbreak began in October 2024 in New Brunswick and has since spread nationwide, with the Government of Canada reporting 5,162 measles cases as of November 1. PAHO experts have traced the outbreak to a specific strain that has persisted beyond the critical 12-month period, indicating ongoing transmission. While the rate of new cases has slowed, the virus continues to pose a significant public health challenge, with 23 new cases reported in the week of October 26 to November 1.
