Can AI replace tools like Asana? I spent 15 minutes building an app to find out.

In a remarkable demonstration of modern technology, I set out to investigate whether artificial intelligence could effectively replace established project management tools like Asana. With just a 15-minute window during a coffee break, I embarked on creating a basic work management application without writing a single line of code. The initiative was sparked by a discussion with my team about the hurdles we faced in our workflow, particularly concerning the Google Doc used to track long-term projects. Using vibe coding—a method that harnesses AI prompts to generate software—I turned to the Base44 app-building platform. Although my prototype was less feature-rich than Asana, the results were surprisingly impressive. This experience underscored a growing concern in the industry known as the "SaaSpocalypse," where AI capabilities threaten to produce comparable products for free, impacting the stock value of established software companies. For example, Asana has seen a 54% decline in its stock this year, while Atlassian, the creator of Trello, has dropped by 59%. An Asana representative responded to these developments, emphasizing that their productivity tools facilitate coordination among large teams and departments, including interactions between humans and AI agents. However, my project illustrated that AI-driven solutions could address specific needs without the complexity of traditional software. Having previously explored various productivity tools such as Notion and Monday.com, I was familiar with their functionalities, which informed my approach. I initiated the process by entering a prompt into ChatGPT, requesting tailored prompts for both Base44 and Lovable. After refining these prompts and troubleshooting potential backend issues, I was ready to proceed. With my instructions in place, I simply inputted them into both platforms and stepped away briefly. Upon returning, I found that both applications had generated complete prototypes. I dedicated an additional five minutes to implement security features, ensuring that each user had appropriate login permissions—something often integrated into established tools like Asana. Customization was next on my agenda. I focused on the visual design of the dashboard, ensuring it allowed for project sorting and a comprehensive calendar view of upcoming stories. I also included sections for ongoing work and enabled downloadable data for easy access by my team. Although I exhausted my free credits on Lovable, I successfully launched my Basic Base44 dashboard in under 15 minutes. As someone who has struggled with coding in the past, I found vibe coding to be a game-changer, making app development accessible to non-technical individuals. My team has since utilized this newly created tool daily during our meetings, proving that even a simple vibe-coded app can meet basic workflow needs effectively and without cost. While some may fear the implications of AI on established software companies, as highlighted by Asana's CEO Dan Rogers, the future may hold new collaborative opportunities. Asana's integration with popular tools like email and Slack continues to offer value, particularly in cybersecurity—an area that remains a challenge for many vibe-coded projects. Thus, while my app fulfills my immediate needs, the complexities of orchestrating human and AI collaboration highlight the ongoing relevance of sophisticated platforms like Asana.
