Cameo’s birthday reminder app, Candl, is a weak attempt at a comeback

Cameo, the celebrity greeting platform, is attempting to bounce back from a challenging year marked by a staggering 90% drop in valuation. The company, grappling with significant financial troubles, was even unable to settle a $600,000 fine imposed by the FTC. In a bid to regain momentum, Cameo introduced Candl, a straightforward birthday reminder app aimed at users who often forget their friends' birthdays. Launched recently and available for free on the App Store, Candl syncs with users' contact lists to create a personalized birthday calendar. This feature enables users to keep track of important dates, ensuring they never miss a celebration. Additionally, the app caters to astrology enthusiasts by offering compatibility insights based on zodiac signs. For users concerned about privacy, the app includes an option to opt out of sharing birthday information with other users. Future updates for Candl may include an AI-driven tool designed to suggest thoughtful gift ideas, further enhancing its functionality. While the app seems practical and could be beneficial for many, some are questioning why Cameo opted for such a simplistic approach after its previous ambitious ventures, including NFT projects and collaborations with content creators. Despite efforts to innovate, Cameo’s app downloads have seen a continued decline. According to data from Appfigures, the Cameo app experienced a drop in installs from 1.1 million in 2021 to just 433,000 in 2022. However, the first half of this year has shown a glimmer of hope with a 24% increase, totaling 270,000 downloads. Nevertheless, global consumer spending within the app has drastically decreased, with figures plummeting from approximately $4.7 million in 2024 to around $1.7 million this year. Only time will tell if Candl can successfully capture user interest and reverse Cameo's downward trajectory.
