Napa Valley town that once rode out emergencies with diesel gets a clean-power backup

CALISTOGA, Calif. (AP) — In the picturesque town of Calistoga, located at the northern tip of Napa Valley, the looming threat of wildfires is a constant concern for residents. The area still bears scars from devastating fires, including the 2020 blaze that prompted a complete evacuation and the 2017 Tubbs fire, which tragically claimed 22 lives in wine country just a short distance away. In response to the wildfire threat, the town previously depended on diesel generators in a popular recreation area, but the overwhelming noise and exhaust made this a less-than-ideal solution. Now, Calistoga is pioneering a groundbreaking energy system that integrates hydrogen fuel cells and batteries, providing enough power to sustain the city for approximately two days during emergencies. Experts highlight that this innovative technology not only delivers clean backup power but could also enhance the stability of the electric grid year-round. Residents expressed their relief as the system underwent final testing in late May, appreciating the promise of a cleaner energy source. City Council member Lisa Gift emphasized the urgent need for sustainable energy solutions, given the increasing frequency and intensity of wildfires exacerbated by climate change. "Continuing to depend on fossil fuels was simply not sustainable," Gift remarked. "This clean and reliable energy solution ensures the safety and resilience of our community." The new facility, developed by California-based Energy Vault, was set to become operational in early June, with plans to export power to the electric grid once the necessary approvals are secured. This installation replaces the diesel generators previously utilized by Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E), now featuring six two-story hydrogen fuel cells produced by Plug Power in New York, alongside pairs of Energy Vault's lithium-ion batteries. Amid concerns over the safety of hydrogen, Fire Chief Jed Matcham assured the community that rigorous safety measures are in place, collaborating with Energy Vault on emergency preparedness. The technology is designed to quickly restore power after PG&E shuts it off to mitigate fire risks, with the batteries and fuel cells working together to maintain a steady power supply for an extended duration. Local business owner Clive Richardson expressed optimism about the new system, noting that it provides a greater sense of security against power outages that can be detrimental to small businesses. "This will give us far more security than we had before," Richardson stated. "It’s fantastic that little ol’ Calistoga has this first-of-a-kind system that could inspire similar solutions worldwide."
