Bill to keep online games playable clears key hurdle in California

A significant step forward for online gaming enthusiasts has been achieved in California, as a pivotal bill designed to ensure long-term access to online games has successfully passed through the appropriations committee of the California Assembly. This progression sets the stage for a crucial vote by the entire legislative body. The bill, known as the Protect Our Games Act, marks a substantial victory for the grassroots movement 'Stop Killing Games,' which advocates for game preservation. This development comes despite opposition from industry lobbyists, notably from the Entertainment Software Association. As it stands, the Protect Our Games Act mandates that digital game publishers who discontinue support for an online game must either issue full refunds to players or provide an updated version of the game that allows continued use independent of the publisher's services. Additionally, the legislation requires publishers to inform players at least 60 days prior to ceasing any services needed for the regular operation of the digital game. Notably, the act excludes completely free games and those available solely during the course of a subscription. Any game sold in California starting January 1, 2027, would fall under this law if it is enacted. This week's committee vote, which passed with a resounding 11–2 majority, has been celebrated by Stop Killing Games (SKG), a UK-based advocacy group formed after the 2024 closure of Ubisoft's The Crew. SKG has played a role in shaping the bill, collaborating closely with Assemblyman Chris Ward, who introduced it earlier this year. Following the committee's decision, SKG representative Monitz Katzner expressed optimism about the bill's rapid progress and the organization's involvement in its drafting process, highlighting the collective efforts of gamers, developers, and publishers alike.
