Elon Musk's artificial intelligence venture, xAI, is under scrutiny from the California Department of Justice, led by Attorney General Rob Bonta. The investigation centers around Grok, an AI chatbot and image generator that has been implicated in the creation and distribution of nonconsensual explicit images, utilizing real photos of individuals. Recent findings from the Internet Watch Foundation indicate that Grok has, alarmingly, allowed the generation of images that depict minors in compromising situations. "xAI appears to be facilitating the large-scale production of deepfake nonconsensual intimate images, which are being used to harass women and girls across the internet, including on the social media platform X," Bonta stated in a press release. The California probe is part of a broader international response, with investigations underway in several countries, including India, Malaysia, Indonesia, Ireland, and Australia. Notably, Malaysia and Indonesia have already suspended the use of Grok while these serious concerns are addressed. This situation continues to develop, and further updates are anticipated.
