Google ordered to pay over $314 million to Android users in California

In a significant ruling, Google has been mandated to pay more than $314.6 million to Android users in California following a class-action lawsuit. The verdict, delivered by a state court in San Jose, found that Google had improperly transmitted and received data from Android devices without user consent while the devices were not in active use. The lawsuit, initiated in 2019 in Santa Clara Superior Court, argued that these practices imposed undue burdens on Android users for the benefit of the tech giant. Allegations suggested that Google programmed its Android phones to send data to its servers even when users were not connected to Wi-Fi, effectively utilizing mobile data that users were paying for. This data was reportedly used by Google to enhance its targeted advertising strategies and improve its mapping services. As this class-action case unfolds, a separate federal lawsuit is also in the pipeline, set to address similar concerns for Android users nationwide, with a trial anticipated to commence in early 2026. Google's spokesperson, José Castañeda, expressed disappointment over the ruling, asserting that the data transfers in question are essential for maintaining the security and performance of Android devices worldwide, and consume less data than sending a single photo. He emphasized that users consent to these data transfers through various terms of service and device settings. This ruling adds to the array of legal challenges faced by Google, which has already been scrutinized in a high-profile anti-monopoly case led by the U.S. government. The Department of Justice has suggested that breaking up Google’s various products, including its search engine, Chrome browser, and Android system, could help mitigate its monopoly status.
