ByteDance to take on Google DeepMind’s ‘Nano Banana’ with Seedream 4.0

ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, has launched its newest artificial intelligence tool, Seedream 4.0, which boasts advanced image generation and editing capabilities. This development comes from ByteDance's Seed Department, which is dedicated to enhancing the company's AI offerings. The tool is positioned to rival Google DeepMind's Nano Banana, also referred to as Gemini 2.5 Flash Image. In internal assessments conducted by ByteDance, Seedream 4.0 reportedly surpassed Gemini 2.5 Flash Image in key metrics, demonstrating superior performance in areas such as prompt adherence, alignment, and overall aesthetics, as reported by the South China Morning Post. Seedream 4.0 is equipped with a comprehensive suite of features, which include text-to-image generation, image editing, reference-based generation, and the ability to create multiple images at once. Key functionalities of Seedream 4.0 include: 1. **Image Editing**: Users can edit images by adding, deleting, or modifying elements based on text prompts. Clear and concise language is encouraged to specify desired changes accurately. 2. **Reference Images**: The tool can extract essential details from provided reference images, making it easier to replicate character designs, artistic styles, and product features. This functionality facilitates tasks like character creation and style transfer. 3. **Multi-Image Inputs**: Seedream 4.0 now supports composite editing with multiple image inputs, allowing users to combine, replace, or apply style transfers across several images. ByteDance advises users to clearly indicate which elements to reference or edit in each image. 4. **Image Sequences**: The tool can generate coherent image sequences that maintain character continuity and a cohesive style. This feature is particularly useful for storyboarding, comic creation, and designs that require a uniform visual identity, such as product designs or emoji packs. To optimize the accuracy of generated images, ByteDance recommends following specific guidelines when crafting prompts. These include clearly describing the scene using natural language, specifying the intended application scenario, enhancing image style with precise keywords or reference images, and improving text rendering accuracy by using quotation marks for specific text that should appear in the images.
