ByteDance reportedly pauses global launch of its Seedance 2.0 video generator

ByteDance has decided to halt its plans for the worldwide launch of its new AI-driven video generation tool, Seedance 2.0, as reported by The Information. The company, renowned as the parent of TikTok and a minority stakeholder in its U.S. counterpart, initially unveiled Seedance 2.0 in China earlier this year in February. The AI model quickly gained attention for producing brief videos, one of which depicted an action sequence featuring Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt. This particular clip went viral but also sparked significant backlash from Hollywood. A notable screenwriter remarked that such technology could spell disaster for traditional screenwriting, stating, "It’s likely over for us." In response to the backlash, various studios sent numerous cease-and-desist letters to ByteDance, with Disney’s legal team accusing the firm of engaging in a "virtual smash-and-grab of Disney’s IP." In light of these concerns, ByteDance committed to enhancing its measures for protecting intellectual property. While the company had aimed to launch Seedance 2.0 globally by mid-March, it is now delaying that timeline as its engineers and legal experts work to address potential legal challenges. As of now, ByteDance has not provided a comment to TechCrunch regarding these developments.
