
Chinese automotive giant BYD has introduced an innovative battery pack that boasts the ability to charge from 10% to 70% in just five minutes. Achieving nearly full capacity takes an additional four minutes, a development that could alleviate existing concerns regarding the charging durations of electric vehicles (EVs), an area where traditional internal combustion engines have held an advantage. Remarkably, even in extreme cold conditions, such as -4°F (-20°C), BYD claims that the new battery pack can charge from 20% to 97% in under 12 minutes. This cutting-edge technology, known as the Blade Battery 2.0, is set to make its debut in the luxury Yangwang U7 sedan. However, there is a significant caveat: this ultra-fast charging capability is only achievable when paired with BYD's new Flash Charging EV chargers. BYD is likely banking on this groundbreaking charging technology to enhance sales and maintain a competitive edge in a rapidly evolving market where other Chinese automakers are aggressively launching their own advanced EVs. The company, which was once a favorite of Berkshire Hathaway's Warren Buffet, has seen its fortunes rise dramatically since its initial investment in 2008. Despite a recent decline in sales, with a reported 36% drop in combined sales volume for January and February 2026 compared to the previous year, the new battery system could be pivotal in attracting new customers while retaining existing ones. The Blade Battery 2.0 utilizes lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) chemistry, which is expected to drive down EV costs by avoiding expensive metals like cobalt and nickel. Currently, LFP battery packs are priced at $81 per kilowatt-hour, significantly lower than the $128 per kilowatt-hour for nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) packs. However, LFP's lower energy density limits its range, leading to its predominant use in more affordable vehicle models. To achieve the impressive five-minute charge time, BYD has also developed the Flash Charging station, capable of delivering 1.5 megawatts of power. This is a notable upgrade from its previous generation charger, which required two 500 kW cables. In comparison, most fast chargers in the U.S. and Europe typically max out at 350 kW, with a growing number reaching 500 kW. The design of BYD's Flash Charging stations facilitates ease of use, with cables suspended from overhead towers allowing for dual-side access for vehicles. The company aims to establish a robust infrastructure, with 4,200 Flash charging stations currently operational in China and plans to add approximately 16,000 more by year-end, which will include grid-scale batteries to alleviate stress on the power grid. In terms of performance, the Yangwang U7 sedan equipped with this battery system can achieve a range of over 1,000 kilometers (621 miles) according to the optimistic China Light Duty Vehicle Test Cycle (CLTC). However, real-world estimates suggest a more realistic range of just over 400 miles on a single charge. While this figure trails behind competitors like the Lucid Air Grand Touring, which can travel 512 miles, the ability to add 240 miles of range in only five minutes could significantly alter consumer perceptions and buying decisions.
