"I cannot believe I would say this one day, but I am burnt out," he confessed, acknowledging the reality of mental health challenges he once dismissed as exaggerated. Having joined xAI in August 2024 before transitioning to OpenAI, Pham's career in the AI field spanned approximately seven months. He now plans to return to Vietnam with his family, where he hopes to embark on a new journey and seek recovery from his experiences. "I hope I will heal. "We appear to be approaching a threshold where our wisdom must grow in equal measure to our capacity to affect the world," Sharma noted in his farewell message. Reports indicate that this exodus of top talent is fueled by concerns over the implications of AI technology and the demanding work schedules reminiscent of the notorious "996" culture. Nathan Lambert, a senior research scientist, described the intense work hours at organizations like OpenAI and Anthropic as a norm that many employees feel compelled to accept in pursuit of their passions.
