Bumblebees can spontaneously solve problems, study finds

Bumblebees, despite their small brains, have showcased an astonishing capacity for social learning, enabling them to use tools, tackle straightforward puzzles, and collaborate effectively to achieve objectives. Recent research published in the journal Science unveils that these remarkable insects can solve object-manipulation challenges without any prior training, marking a groundbreaking discovery in insect cognition. This study represents the first instance of spontaneous problem-solving observed in insects. Co-authored by Olli Loukola from the University of Finland, the research builds on a 2024 study in which bumblebees were trained to work together to overcome complex tasks. These cognitive challenges were previously thought to be exclusive to larger-brained mammals like humans and chimpanzees. In the earlier study, Loukola and his team trained pairs of bumblebees to push a Lego block to a designated spot in a mini-arena or to push against a door at the end of a tunnel to access a reward. The researchers noted that the bees were more inclined to engage in the tasks when their partners also participated, in contrast to untrained control groups. This suggests that bumblebees can learn to tackle new cooperative tasks beyond their hives and may even be working together intentionally. However, the researchers emphasized the need for more in-depth observations to gain a clearer understanding of the roles played by each bee in these interactions. In the new study, Loukola aimed to determine whether bumblebees could spontaneously solve problems. The first experiment involved an artificial flower positioned above a pit on the floor, making it impossible for a bee to simply hover and reach it. The solution required the bee to roll a small ball into the pit and then climb on top to access the flower. Loukola described this scenario as an insect version of the classic ‘box-and-banana’ problem, where the animal must comprehend that an object can be manipulated and used as a tool to achieve an otherwise unreachable goal.
