Startups frequently express their commitment to diversity, yet many struggle to put effective hiring practices into action. For growth-stage companies, relying on familiar talent pools in Silicon Valley is often the path of least resistance. However, if a founder genuinely wishes to create a diverse team, this commitment must start with the very first hire. Leah Solivan, founder of Taskrabbit and managing director of Precedent.VC, recently shared insights on this topic with Isabelle Johannessen during an episode of Build Mode. As Taskrabbit transitioned from being funded by Solivan’s personal credit cards to becoming a major player in the gig economy, the leadership team made conscious efforts to recruit diverse talent for every position. Solivan emphasized that diversity is not a mere coincidence; it must be integrated into the recruitment and hiring processes from the outset. "If you approach it this way from the beginning, it becomes easier to foster a diverse culture and team. The networks you build will naturally reflect that diversity, creating a self-sustaining ecosystem," Solivan stated. According to her, it’s too late to address diversity after scaling has occurred. Every startup operates within a network of talent centered around its founder, which tends to mirror the founder's community. Therefore, enhancing diversity in the tech industry starts with who is financing these founders. Solivan, an early-stage investor, has a unique perspective on the financial flows within the industry. "The funding originates from limited partners, who decide which venture capitalists to support. Subsequently, these venture capitalists choose which founders to invest in," she explained. "While the money is available, it is often controlled by individuals with varying biases." Importantly, a founder or their supporting VCs do not have to be from underrepresented backgrounds to prioritize hiring from a diverse talent pool. Solivan recommends aiming to review at least two résumés from female candidates for every male candidate and encourages tapping into a broader range of networks while promoting individuals from diverse backgrounds into leadership roles. "We need to provide a safety net for those taking the leap into the unknown," she concluded.
