BSNL's Rs 1.34 lakh phone is not for everyone; Why you can not buy a satellite phone

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has introduced a satellite phone priced at Rs 1.34 lakh, specifically designed for individuals operating or traveling in remote regions where traditional mobile networks are absent. This device is not intended for general consumers but caters to a distinct group of users. Unlike conventional smartphones that rely on cellular towers, the BSNL satellite phone connects directly to satellites, enabling communication from off-grid locations. It is primarily targeted at professionals such as disaster response teams, security personnel, researchers, defense staff, and those engaged in remote operations. BSNL emphasizes that the satellite phone is optimal for challenging environments, stating it is suitable for “areas where conventional mobile networks can’t reach.” The phone boasts features such as satellite connectivity, emergency communication capabilities, a long-lasting battery, and robust design suited for rugged conditions. It's important to note that the BSNL Satellite Phone is not meant for everyday use. In India, satellite phone services are strictly regulated, requiring users to obtain approval from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) before they can activate the device. Additionally, users must subscribe to a prepaid or postpaid plan, starting at Rs 5,835 per month (excluding GST), which provides 30 voice minutes or SMS. Outgoing calls are charged at Rs 25 per minute, and SMS messages also cost Rs 25 each. Users have various plan options depending on their needs. Currently, India permits satellite phone operations only through BSNL's Inmarsat-backed Global Satellite Phone Service (GSPS), necessitating verification from both BSNL and DoT regulations for service activation.
