BSNL launches its new ₹1.34 lakh satellite phone, but it's not for everyone

In a significant move for connectivity in isolated areas, BSNL, the state-run telecom operator in India, has introduced a new satellite phone priced at ₹1,34,166, including taxes. This device is designed for individuals who find themselves in locations devoid of mobile network coverage, providing an essential communication tool for regions where traditional mobile services are unavailable. Unlike standard smartphones that rely on terrestrial mobile towers, the BSNL satellite phone communicates directly with satellites. This capability allows users to make voice calls from some of the most remote environments. The phone has been developed in collaboration with global satellite network providers like Inmarsat, ensuring robust satellite-based communication across challenging terrains. Targeted primarily at professionals in demanding fields, the satellite phone is ideal for sectors such as Defence, Maritime, Disaster Response, Mining, and Adventure Travel. However, it's important to note that this device is not intended for the general consumer market. In India, satellite phones are strictly regulated, and potential users must obtain explicit authorization from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) before making a purchase. BSNL emphasizes that this satellite phone is a critical communication tool for mission-oriented situations rather than a replacement for everyday mobile devices. It is particularly valuable during emergencies or for individuals working in remote industrial locations and those on adventurous journeys into isolated areas. Furthermore, BSNL has cautioned that unauthorized possession or operation of a satellite phone could result in legal repercussions under Indian law.
