Broadcom CEO says generative AI will become a much larger part of global GDP

During an interview with CNBC, Hock Tan, CEO of Broadcom, expressed his belief that generative artificial intelligence could significantly enhance the global GDP as it becomes integrated across various sectors. Currently, the global GDP stands at approximately $110 trillion, with about 30% derived from knowledge-based and technology-driven industries. Tan elaborated that the inclusion of generative AI could elevate this percentage to 40%, translating to an additional $10 trillion annually. This anticipated growth in AI's economic impact could greatly benefit emerging tech sectors and their dependent industries. Broadcom, known for its semiconductor and networking products, has already reaped rewards from the AI surge, with its stock rising by 53.86%. The company recently announced a partnership with OpenAI, committing to jointly develop and deploy 10 gigawatts of custom AI accelerators. This collaboration is part of a larger initiative to advance AI technology across the industry, leading to a notable 9.88% increase in Broadcom's stock by the end of the trading day. Tan recognized OpenAI’s pivotal role in the AI landscape, noting its valuation at around $500 billion, even as a private entity. He stated that Broadcom's pragmatic approach still allows for long-term strategic planning, particularly in relation to the generative AI trend. While Broadcom has not disclosed its customer identities, it confirmed the development of new AI chips for three major cloud clients and reported securing $10 billion in chip orders from another undisclosed customer. Tan highlighted that Broadcom is collaborating with about seven key players, four of whom have committed to substantial production orders. "We are optimistic about these partnerships," Tan remarked, emphasizing that these companies require significant computing power to excel in the competitive landscape of foundation model creation.
