Broadcom's latest earnings report has revealed a dip in software revenue that was less than anticipated, leading to a drop in its stock during after-hours trading. The semiconductor giant announced a significant 48% increase in revenue, reaching $15 billion compared to the same quarter last year. However, the forecast for the upcoming quarter projected revenue at around $29.4 billion, slightly above Wall Street's expectations of $28.53 billion. Despite this setback, Broadcom shares have surged nearly 40% this year, outpacing the Nasdaq's 16% rise. The stock has seen nearly a ninefold increase since late 2022, coinciding with the rise of generative AI technologies like ChatGPT. Broadcom reported a robust net income of $9.31 billion, translating to $1.91 per share, marking an 88% increase from $4.97 billion, or $1.03 per share, a year earlier. The adjusted earnings, which exclude stock-based compensation and tax adjustments, reflect the company's expanding role in AI technology. The company has been at the forefront of custom chip design, catering to major tech players such as Amazon, Meta, and Microsoft, who are increasingly investing in their own chip development. Broadcom's CEO, Hock Tan, noted that AI revenue has more than doubled year-over-year, reaching $10.8 billion, driven by the demand for custom AI chips. He also projected that AI revenue could triple in the current quarter, potentially hitting $16 billion. In its semiconductor solutions segment, Broadcom reported $15.1 billion in revenue, surpassing the StreetAccount estimate of $14.72 billion. The company continues to diversify its offerings, including enterprise software obtained through its 2023 acquisition of VMware, which generated $7.18 billion in infrastructure software revenue. However, this figure fell short of the $7.32 billion analysts had anticipated. As the situation evolves, investors and analysts are keeping a close eye on Broadcom's performance and strategic direction in the AI sector.
