AI Governance Gap: 30% of firms face security incidents despite awareness, study finds

As the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) tools in businesses accelerates, so too do the cybersecurity threats that accompany them. A recent report from Sprinto, the CISO Pulse Check 2026, highlights a disturbing trend: nearly 30% of organizations experienced significant AI-related security incidents over the past year. This statistic underscores a stark 'execution gap' between policy awareness and practical implementation in the realm of AI governance. Despite being cognizant of these threats, many organizations find themselves struggling to effectively mitigate risks associated with AI technologies. The report points out that common vulnerabilities include shadow AI usage, model inversion, and data poisoning. While over 70% of companies are actively monitoring AI regulations and preparing for compliance, they often fail to treat AI threats as integral to their overall security strategies. Instead, these risks are frequently managed in isolation, leading to inadequate responses. Raghuveer Kancherla, Co-founder of Sprinto, emphasizes the urgency of adapting to the rapid pace of AI development. He stated, "The companies that thrive in 2026 will not necessarily be the ones that adopt AI the quickest, but those that establish trust, control, and resilience at an equally swift pace." In light of these findings, many organizations are beginning to take action. Approximately 69% have allocated budgets for AI risk management initiatives for the year 2026, with an additional 17% planning to follow suit. Moving forward, it is crucial for businesses to prioritize the implementation of technical controls, conduct comprehensive AI risk assessments, and provide employee training on safe AI practices, to effectively bridge the existing governance gap.
