Researchers develop a new process to get lithium out of rocks

In a significant advancement for battery technology, researchers have unveiled an innovative technique for extracting lithium from rock sources, which could alter the landscape of lithium production. While various battery chemistries exist, none have matched the extensive scalability of lithium-ion batteries, making them economically dominant. This creates a challenge for emerging battery technologies to compete with the established lithium supply chain's efficiency and cost-effectiveness. Although lithium is widely available, the economically viable extraction of this metal is a different story. The most cost-effective lithium extraction occurs from brine sources, primarily found in South America. Alternative extraction methods exist but tend to be significantly pricier. A recent study published in Science details a new, energy-efficient process developed by a team from MIT in collaboration with several companies in the Boston area. This groundbreaking technique utilizes considerably less energy than traditional methods and successfully regenerates all initial chemicals used, while also producing commercially viable byproducts. Lithium is found in various minerals, with pegmatite being a notable source of lithium oxide deposits in the Northeast United States. However, the most prevalent lithium ore globally is spodumene, a lithium-aluminum silicate (LiAl(SiO3)2). Current extraction methods for spodumene are energy-intensive and generate substantial waste, typically involving heating the mineral to around 1,000° C followed by a sulfuric acid leaching process. The innovative process introduced by the research team enhances energy efficiency and reduces waste significantly. Key chemicals are regenerated during the extraction process, and the silicon and aluminum byproducts can be utilized in existing commercial applications, showcasing a promising shift towards more sustainable lithium production.
