Researchers find small RNAs that can make copies of themselves

The quest to understand the origins of life on Earth continues to intrigue scientists, with a significant breakthrough now shedding light on one of its critical components. Researchers have long theorized that the emergence of self-replicating RNA molecules was fundamental to the development of life. Unlike DNA, RNA can not only carry genetic information but also fold into complex three-dimensional structures that function as catalysts. This dual capability suggests that early life forms may have relied solely on RNA for both heredity and metabolic functions, eliminating the need for proteins. A crucial aspect of this theory hinges on the ability of RNA to replicate itself. While a variety of catalytic RNAs, known as ribozymes, have been discovered that can facilitate reactions involving other RNA molecules, the challenge remained: finding a ribozyme capable of self-replication. In an exciting development, a research team has identified a remarkably short RNA strand, consisting of just 45 bases, that can indeed make copies of itself. This discovery opens new avenues for understanding the biochemical processes that could have led to the first forms of life. While many ribozymes have been found to catalyze reactions that link two RNA molecules together, only a few have demonstrated the polymerase activity necessary for RNA synthesis. Interestingly, some ribozymes initially categorized as ligases have shown the ability to function as polymerases when subjected to selective pressures. This overlap in functionality highlights the versatile nature of RNA and its pivotal role in the origins of life.
