In a significant development, the United States has successfully established a preliminary agreement with China regarding the popular social media platform TikTok, as reported by CNBC. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent revealed that while the deal is primarily between two private entities, the commercial terms have been finalized. This announcement comes shortly after U.S. President Donald Trump alluded to a potential deal on his social media platform, Truth Social. Trump stated, "A deal was also reached on a 'certain' company that young people in our Country very much wanted to save," and noted his intention to discuss the matter with China's President Xi Jinping later this week. The timing of this agreement is critical, as it precedes the impending deadline of September 17 for a potential TikTok ban. Delegations from both the U.S. and China convened in Madrid to engage in discussions surrounding economic policy. Earlier in June, President Trump expressed optimism regarding a group of prospective buyers for TikTok. Moreover, reports indicated that the U.S. was prepared to impose a ban on TikTok if China did not relent on its requests concerning tariffs and technology restrictions. The tensions surrounding TikTok escalated when the U.S. enforced a ban on January 19, following a federal law enacted by former President Joe Biden. Despite this, Trump has issued various executive orders aimed at keeping the app operational in the U.S.
