It's a terrible time to quit your job. These 7 Big Tech workers share why they did it anyway.

It's a terrible time to quit your job. These 7 Big Tech workers share why they did it anyway.

In a time when job security seems precarious, a number of tech professionals are making the bold choice to resign from their stable positions at major companies. Their stories reveal a common thread: a desire for more meaningful work and greater control over their career paths. One such individual is Joslyn Orgill, who faced a pivotal decision while employed as a data engineer at Google. Despite the allure of a six-figure salary, Orgill felt increasingly invisible within the corporate structure and yearned for a deeper academic pursuit. Last August, she took the leap, leaving Google behind to enroll in a Ph.D. program at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. "Google's an amazing company, but the job just wasn't a great fit for me," she reflected. Similarly, David Chong, who worked at Microsoft, grappled with stagnation in his promotion prospects. Since joining the tech giant in 2022, he found himself frustrated with the lack of upward mobility and felt isolated as the most senior engineer on his team. In September, he decided to step away and focus on his startup aspirations, which involved creating an AI sales agent. "My plan is to give myself about three years. If all else fails, I'll go back into the job market," Chong stated confidently. The shifting workplace culture and the rise of return-to-office mandates have also pushed others, like Nicole Landis Ferragonio and Joe Luchs from Amazon, to pursue entrepreneurial dreams. Both left their positions to concentrate on their startup, Datalinx AI, driven by the potential of AI technologies and a desire for autonomy. Personal circumstances have played a significant role in these decisions as well. Kruthika Jayatheertha, a former senior user experience researcher at Microsoft, chose to resign after taking maternity leave. Her time at home allowed her to witness her child's milestones firsthand, prompting her to recognize the importance of being present during early development stages. "It was clear to me that stepping away from work was the right choice," she expressed. Alyson Isaacs, who transitioned from a draining startup to a product role at Meta, found herself weighing the impact of her father's passing on her career aspirations. This pivotal moment led her to resign and pursue her passion for entrepreneurship, focusing on an AI solution for personal wellness. These narratives highlight a broader trend in the tech industry, where a significant number of workers are opting to leave their positions despite a competitive job market. For many, the quest for time, fulfillment, and the chance to create something new outweighs the stability of a high-paying job. As they navigate their crossroads, these individuals are reshaping their futures beyond the confines of traditional corporate roles.
