The US is looking at a year of chaotic weather

While 2025 has been marked as the third-hottest year on record, the United States experienced a relatively tranquil year regarding climate-related disasters. Notably, no significant hurricanes made landfall, and the area affected by wildfires was below the decade-long average. However, this calm is about to be disrupted as the West braces for an extraordinary heat wave expected to break records. Beginning this week, a significant high-pressure system is poised to unleash record-breaking temperatures across the American West. The National Weather Service (NWS) warns that numerous temperature records are likely to fall in various states, with effects reaching as far east as Missouri and Tennessee. Heat advisories have been issued for California, Arizona, and Nevada, alongside fire warnings in Wyoming, Nebraska, South Dakota, and Colorado. According to climate scientist Daniel Swain from the University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources, this heat wave is unprecedented for this time of year. "This will be the single strongest ridge we’ve observed outside of summer in any month," he stated. Swain emphasized the duration of this heat event, noting, "We’re not talking about just a day or two of extreme heat. Many areas have already experienced record highs for a week, and we anticipate this will continue for at least another seven to ten days." As March progresses, temperatures are expected to escalate further, potentially shattering records that typically belong to April and May. Swain remarked on the rarity of such weather patterns, pointing out that it’s unusual to see cities like San Francisco, Salt Lake City, and Denver all experiencing 85- or 90-degree temperatures in the same week. With the forecast also indicating a strong El Niño event on the horizon, the upcoming months may witness a series of unpredictable and extreme weather conditions, exacerbating the ongoing impacts of climate change driven by human activity.
