Box CEO says he looks at a Slack channel to see who is using AI the most — not a token leaderboard

Aaron Levie, the CEO of Box, shared his insights on how his company approaches AI usage among its engineers. While he acknowledged the potential for a competitive token leaderboard—where engineers could vie to maximize their AI token usage—he noted that such a concept hasn’t gained widespread traction within Box yet. Levie described this trend as a 'fun, novel thing' that could push AI technology to its limits and enhance productivity. The discussion of token rankings has become a hot topic in the tech industry. Notably, some employees at Meta had previously created a leaderboard dubbed 'Claudeonomics' before it was discontinued. Additionally, OpenAI is known to maintain its own token leaderboard. Tokens serve as a metric for computing power in AI, representing how usage is priced; essentially, large language models convert words into numerical inputs, with each token approximating three-quarters of a word. At Box, Levie keeps track of token consumption on an individual employee basis but emphasized that they do not celebrate token maximization to the same extent as some other companies. Instead, the primary focus remains on enhancing product velocity and broadening the product roadmap. To identify the most active users of AI technology, Levie utilizes a Slack channel where employees exchange coding best practices, which often aligns with those who most frequently utilize AI agents. Levie believes that the use of AI agents will soon extend beyond engineering roles, impacting sectors such as marketing, finance, and law. He urged companies to explore how they can leverage this new wave of intelligence. However, he pointed out that most enterprises, unlike Meta or venture-capital-backed startups, may not be able to maximize token usage effectively, labeling this challenge as the 'new frontier' for businesses. He shared anecdotes about various strategies for allocating AI resources, mentioning one company that implemented a 'Shark Tank'-style pitch system for computing budgets, where employees must propose funding requests, test their ideas, and then scale successful projects. Levie also noted that some organizations provide more advanced models to their most productive sectors, ensuring efficient and cost-effective AI deployment. Despite the intriguing idea of a corporate leaderboard for AI token usage, Levie stated that he has no plans to implement such a system at Box. He humorously remarked on the potential for unexpected outcomes, suggesting that it could lead to employees spending their budgets on impractical initiatives.
